Basarabian Antique Handwoven Wool Carpet — A Rare Collector’s Piece

A remarkable antique Basarabian carpet, estimated to date from approximately 80–100 years ago, and a true example of the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic tradition of handwoven Bessarabian textiles.
This is not simply a decorative rug, but a substantial collector’s piece, distinguished by its considerable age, impressive dimensions, extraordinary richness of handworked detail and highly elaborate floral composition.
Entirely handwoven by hand from natural wool, the carpet measures approximately 400 × 225 cm (13.1 × 7.4 ft) — an unusually impressive size for a piece of this character. The extraordinary amount of floral ornamentation, combined with the meticulous execution of the motifs, makes it a particularly rare and visually important textile.
The design is exceptionally rich and sophisticated, densely adorned with roses, carnations, smaller blossoms, foliage, scrolling stems and botanical elements, all arranged against a deep dark ground. The abundance and complexity of the motifs are a testament to the time, skill and patience required to create such a piece entirely by hand.
The carpet is double-sided, offering two distinct colour expressions. One side has a softer, more subdued palette, while the other presents delicate, sweet tones with slightly stronger and more vibrant accents. The most part of the photographs show the more intensely coloured side, but there is also a full carpet picture and details also from the other side.
Its age, scale, craftsmanship and exceptionally elaborate decoration give it a distinctive presence and make it particularly appealing to collectors of antique textiles, traditional Eastern European folk art and historic handwoven carpets.
Considering that it is approximately a century old, the carpet remains in very good condition. There is only minor fraying at one corner, and few minor flaws and repairings which do not compromise its integrity, usability or overall visual beauty.
